Environmental Protection Specialist

The Environmental Protection Specialist position is located in the Environmental and Safety Division of the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate in Glynco, Georgia. Being an Environmental Protection Specialist makes you a valuable member of the FLETC team and mission. You will be responsible for ensuring that the environmental programs are formulated and administered in accordance with Department of Homeland Security policies and procedures, and standards promulgated by environmental laws and regulations issued by higher authority. Typical assignments include:
Conducting detailed environmental compliance inspections on a continuing basis to identify and resolve deficiencies and to improve compliance relative to applicable environmental laws, regulations, and practices in law enforcement training areas, classrooms and support facilities that include, but are not limited to, counterterrorism, live fire shoot houses, basic and advanced firearms, advanced and basic explosives, high speed pursuit vehicles, high speed waterborne vessels, garage areas, hazardous waste storage areas and more. Assisting in the preparation of the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) reports and evaluating, preparing, and/or reviewing impact analysis documentations on proposed actions to be carried out at FLETC. Managing hazardous wastes and hazardous materials programs. Establishing and maintaining natural resources management strategies and goals related to forestry and wildlife management programs, including wildlife population management. Reviewing policies, procedures, and standards to continually identify opportunities to correct program weaknesses and improve program strengths. Working with Environmental Specialists and others from a variety of technical fields and programs to resolve interdisciplinary problems. Developing courses and instructing both staff and contractor employees in environmental knowledge and skills. The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one of the following:
At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting formal and informal environmental compliance audits; coordinating and preparing environmental studies, investigations and reports; and recommending procedures for managing and disposing of hazardous, regulated and non-regulated waste streams. OR Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher graduate level education or LL.M. Education must be related to the position being filled. Transcripts must be provided. OR Possession of an equivalent combination of specialize experience and graduate education listed above. Only graduate education beyond the first 36 semester hours will be combined with the specialized experience. Time-in-Grade:
At the GS-11 level, current and former GS federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09 grade level in the federal service. The time-in-grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess the following:
At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience directing, evaluating, and formulating plans and policies for large scale, complex environmental programs that encompass environmental protection related to multi-faceted facilities, including environmental programs associated with facilities maintenance, administrative facilities, land management, motor vehicle maintenance/repair facilities, hazardous materials storage/management including explosives and construction. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps and AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel Management must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. At the GS-12 level, current and former GS federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11 grade level in the federal service. The time-in-grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Re-employed annuitants' annual salaries will be reduced by the amount of their retirement annuity and by further cost of living increases. FERS retirees receiving a FERS annuity supplement must also be aware that, like social security benefits, their FERS annuity supplement is subject to an earnings test and may be reduced if the salary earned is more than the social security exempt amount of earnings. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
