Cancer Registry Abstractor

As a Cancer Registry Abstractor, you will assume responsibility for the identification of cancer patients and the maintenance of the Cancer Registry in accordance with the requirements of the facility, and the standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This will include coding and abstracting clinical data, obtaining long-term follow up data and analyzing medical records/reports, and reading/interpreting various components of medical records, among other responsibilities. To qualify, you should hold an Associate's degree in Cancer Registry or Cancer Information Management from an NCRA-accredited program or an Associate's degree accompanied by required certifications. Current Certified Tumor Registrar certification is necessary; Registered Health Information Technician certification is preferred. You'll need at least one year of experience working in the field of cancer registry abstracting records. You'll have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the guidelines for cancer abstracting as set forth by the American College of Surgeons, the American Joint Committee on Cancer and the SEER Summary Staging Manual. You'll also need extensive knowledge of medical terminology, the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) codes and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD9-CM) codes.
